Step 1: Behaviour

Behaviour

Well, it’s all about attitude. We know that the biggest hurdle to overcome is not the desire for businesses to become greener, but getting the whole business to share this vision.

Our own research revealed that only a minority of businesses (14%) currently invest in the training of staff to change their behaviour towards energy consumption.¹

And, one of our customers put it like this...

“I guess we didn’t truly believe in all this greener stuff and we’re always too busy at work to make changes to our everyday habits. Until now, no-one was encouraging us or offering to show us how it could be done”

No matter how dynamic and independent we all like to think we are, from time to time, when its something new to us, we all need someone to take the lead, to show us the way, and to change a bad habit. “

So your first goal as an Energy Marshal is to understand where energy is being used in the workplace and then the opinions and behaviours of your colleagues.

Get to know your equipment. Check if your printers, screens and other IT equipment have energy saving features. If they do, use them and find out the limitations.

Turn the thermostat down if its too warm rather than opening doors or windows. Make sure your heating timers are working and set to come during working hours only.
